Leadership is a multifaceted construct characterized by various traits, behaviors, and actions that inspire individuals or groups towards a common objective. Notable figures such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Oprah Winfrey, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett possess qualities that exemplify great leadership.

1. Are They Leaders?


George Washington is often regarded as the father of the United States, leading the nation through its formative years. His ability to unite the colonies against British rule and later preside over the Constitutional Convention showcases his leadership capabilities (Chernow, 2017). Abraham Lincoln is another monumental leader, remembered for his commitment to justice, exemplified through the Emancipation Proclamation and his ability to lead the nation through the Civil War (Brands, 2018).
Oprah Winfrey has significantly influenced media and societal norms, using her platform to empower others and contribute to social change (Stark, 2020). Franklin D. Roosevelt, who led the country during the Great Depression and World War II, demonstrated resilience and strategic thinking (Drew, 2018).
On the other hand, business moguls like Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett are also leaders but in the corporate sector. They have transformed industries through innovation and visionary thinking. For instance, Bezos revolutionized e-commerce with Amazon, while Jobs' innovations at Apple transformed technology consumption (Stone, 2021; Isaacson, 2011).
Additional leaders I identify include Nelson Mandela, who demonstrated unparalleled courage and resilience in the fight against apartheid, advocating for equality and forgiveness (Sampson, 2011). Similarly, Malala Yousafzai has become a global leader in education advocacy, inspiring youth through her activism (Yousafzai, 2013).

2. Leader-Follower Relationship


Ideally, I believe the leader-follower relationship should be one characterized by trust, mutual respect, and open communication. As a leader, I should encourage feedback and foster an environment where followers feel valued and heard. This aligns with transformational leadership theories, which emphasize motivating and inspiring followers to transcend their self-interests for the sake of greater objectives (Bass & Riggio, 2006).
Such leadership behaviors are crucial as they enhance organizational commitment and boost morale. When followers feel appreciated and believed in, they are more likely to take initiative, exhibit creativity, and contribute positively toward the team's goals.

3. Leadership Behaviors


There are several leadership behaviors I believe I must demonstrate for effective leadership. These include active listening, empathy, and adaptability. Active listening allows me to understand the concerns and suggestions of my followers fully. Empathy enables me to connect with my team on a personal level, understanding their motivations and challenges (Goleman, 1998).
Adaptability is crucial in a fast-changing world. A leader must be flexible and open to change to guide their team effectively through varying conditions. Research has shown that adaptive leaders are more successful in achieving their objectives, as they can pivot as necessary (Yukl, 2013).

4. Ethical Leadership Behaviors


Ethical leadership is vital in maintaining integrity and trust within an organization. Among the ethical behaviors I must actively demonstrate include honesty, respect, and fairness. Honesty fosters an atmosphere of transparency, where followers feel secure in their interactions (Brown & Treviño, 2006).
Respect for diverse perspectives is equally important, as it allows for a more inclusive environment, which enhances creativity and problem-solving. Fairness ensures that decisions are made impartially, reinforcing credibility and loyalty within the team (Toor & Ofori, 2009). Demonstrating these ethical behaviors not only upholds my moral responsibility as a leader but also encourages the same values among my followers, cultivating a positive organizational culture (Leroy et al., 2012).
