As you have learned, an ethical dilemma is a conflict between alternatives where neither alternative is desirable. Choosing either one will compromise something. ANSWER: The Company should have utilized the utilitarian framework. In this framework, every decision should be the one that produces the least amount of pain and distress. The ethical framework that Ford illustrated with its decision was the egoistic framework. Egoism prioritizes one's own interests and benefits above the welfare of others (Schwartz, 2017). In this instance, Ford's focus was solely on its profit margins and minimizing costs associated with recalls or product modifications. Instead of ensuring the safety of its consumers, the company’s leadership chose a path that would enable them to save money at the cost of human lives. Ford's calculation demonstrated a willingness to exploit customers' safety to maintain financial profitability (Strother, 2018).

B. Recommended Ethical Framework for a Different Outcome


The company should have adopted a utilitarian ethical framework. Utilitarianism evaluates actions based upon the consequences they produce for the majority (De Los Reyes Jr, Scholz, & Smith, 2017). In Ford’s situation, the utilitarian approach would have advocated for recalling the Pinto models to prevent potential loss of life and injuries, placing public welfare above profit. This framework teaches us that the right course of action is one that maximizes overall benefit and minimizes suffering (Kaptein, 2017). Had Ford implemented this approach, they could have saved lives and potentially preserved their reputation and customer trust in the long run.

4. Recommendations


Ford management should learn to include lower-level employees in decision-making processes, especially those that have serious implications on product safety and public welfare.
