7-1 Final Project Submission: IT Consultation Report Israel Pastor IT 201 Computer Platform Technologies 4/21/2017 I will explore the Business need for a small advertising company called MilleniAds. Although this is a small company with only 10 employees, they offer a wide variety of customized sales flyers, brochures, and other branded items, such as letterhead and business cards, that apply a youthful, fresh perspective targeting the millennial demographics. Because the company would like to keep track of inventory, sales, and expenses digitally, I will need to provide the best technology solutions within a 0,000 dollar project budget. For such a small company, I suggest that we go with a scalable cloud solution.
This solution will allow the 10 employees to stay connected both in office and at home with a Dropbox Enterprise solution for file share services for both online and offline usage. We will want to procure laptops that can handle running multiple virtual applications, as well as applications that are native to the Operating System but we will go a little more into the hardware further down the road. We will want to have Microsoft Office installed as well so that will require a hard drive that has at least 350 GB, and memory that can handle large documents. I’ve come across documents that had pivot tables and charts, and will cells within the thousands and having a computer with less than 4gb of RAM will be a nightmare.
Those documents usually require 12 GBs of ram to function properly. I also agreed to implement an Office 365 solution for webmail, Office products, and SharePoint. I would leverage SharePoint for the Intranet. I would build sites for each group to upload and download documents at their leisure, while locking down things like company calendar, HR information, and performance evaluation documents. Often it’s a struggle within IT to make document sharing a convenience for staff, while keeping the company safe.
Imagine the backlash if company’s potential earnings or their client’s information becomes public due to poor security controls. What if the System Administrator’s computer was hacked or accessed by who is not on the access list. This can cause a company to lose earnings or worst, bankrupt. In addition to the new computers, we will run a Windows 10 Operating System. The encryption for the hard drive will be Bitlocker.
Over the past few years, Bitlocker has proven its worth and comes native to the Windows 10 Operating System. Not using this encryption or something similar can result in data loss. Imagine losing a computer that does not have encryption. All of your pictures, work data, and email will be at risk of theft. This is all the suggestions my company will make to ensure that we are providing this company the best technology and security possible.
I am moving in the direction of proposing that MilleniAds use a SAAS solution. Having the ability to scale up or down based on the financial climate will be essential to the business. In this day and age, we are almost always connected to the internet and in front of our computers. The theory of needing to have services on-premise is changing. More companies are looking into having the vendor manage the troubleshooting and maintain the software.
This allows the business to focus on servicing their clients. We will run a software solution that would be available across multiple devices. I looked at the cost of developing our software in house, patching and deploying it will be expensive. We are constantly looking for ways to save the company money. I feel that going with a cloud solution will do just that.
I will procure 5 Adobe Creative Cloud licenses for the graphics design and marketing team. I will also procure 5 Fishbowl license for the asset managers, sales, and accounting team. Both teams will report back to the CEO and management team. Lastly, I will purchase Microsoft Office365 for all employees because this will allow them to access their emails, Intranet, and office suite from their cell phones. This will provide mobility while saving money.
Staff can now use their mobile devices to access the company’s data and stay connected while on travel or working remotely. We will also create an incentive program for staff that opt to use their personal devices instead of having the company purchase a device for them. I believe that with this proposed solution in place, we will not only meet our financial goals, we will create a connected company that promotes a mobile yet agile working environment. We can even budget for 3 iPads for staff that operate outside of the office in order to stay connected. The iPads will run RDP back to their laptops, making their primary machines accessible.
Now that we’ve explored a technology solution for this company, now we should look at the software and hardware requirements for this company. SAAS provides flexible payments. The pay for what you use or pay as you go model will cut cost substantially. We will also have the option to add or remove features or services on demand. Currently when we outgrow the space on our servers, we have to purchase new hardware to accommodate the need.
With our new solution we can add space as we need by adding extra services to our subscription. Having the option to scale out our environment will make us more agile and competitive in the market. We will also cut out the reseller in this new environment. Right now we are paying multiple resellers for their software licenses and software procurement services. In our new environment the IT staff will no longer be responsible for patch management.
This will give our IT team the opportunity to focus on Network security and other system administration tasks. I can attest that many times us IT technicians can become overwhelmed with Asset Management and license Management. Streamlining many of the services that we purchase will make daily operations run a bit smoother. Now that we’ve established and understand the Hardware and Software requirement from our client, we will have to get them connected to each other in a secure manner. We’ve also determined that we are going with a cloud based solution for our end users.
One of the main obstacles that MilleniAds has presented to our Project team is establishing an environment that will promote remote network connectivity while maintaining a secure and strong in office infrastructure. Let’s start with a T1digital transmission service coming in from the DMARC. Having this line will ensure connectivity from our service carrier to our company’s site. My next purchase will be a router for my MDF. I want to ensure that the router is sufficient enough to handle VPN, IPsec technology as well.
The model I would go with is the Cisco ISR C892FSP Router - 8 Port. This model will be ideal for wireless service, secure voice and data communications. Although this router has firewall features that would be utilized as a baseline for network security, I would add a Barracuda appliance on top of the traffic to ensure secure data transmission throughout the network. For the switches, I chose to stay within the Cisco environment with the Cisco ISR C892FSP Router - 8 Port. I’ve designed for each office to have 1 network port and an IP phone with an available port on the back of the phone for a connection to the PC or Desktop.
I would order a few netgear 8port switches for conference rooms and to have as a backup for the offices. Of course in this day and age, we are almost completely always wireless. I would order Ubiquiti UAP-3 UniFi IEEE 802.11n 300 Mbps Wireless Access Points for our floors and conference rooms. I would ensure that we first test this device for full saturation throughout our floors before deployment. Ensuring that you provide network connectivity for your end users is crucial to productivity.
I want to promote collaboration and creativity so as a network architect, the best way to do that is by having a highly available network. And when I say available, meaning to employees and our guest. This network would not be available to the folks at the bus stop or for warchalking. Lastly, I will have laserjet black/white printers on each floor and 1 color printer in a designated area for staff to use for proposals or communications that requires color. I feel that we have covered all of your technology needs and will provide support to MilleniAds during and after the technology upgrade.
We are looking to build a partnership with MilleniAds that will be long lasting and prosperous for years to come.
