The COVID-19 pandemic has forced individuals and organizations worldwide to confront ethical dilemmas that challenge their core values. In this essay, I will explore an experience that highlighted a conflict between two core values: truth and loyalty. I will detail the situation that led to this conflict, how I resolved it, the consequences of my decision, and apply ethical decision-making frameworks to understand what I could have done differently.

Value Conflict: Truth vs. Loyalty


In March 2020, as the world began to grapple with the reality of the pandemic, my organization was faced with a significant challenge. As an employee in the communications department of a healthcare provider, I was part of the team responsible for disseminating information about our response to COVID-19. The organization's leadership decided to downplay the severity of the situation in internal communications to maintain staff morale and prevent panic. However, there was a growing body of evidence suggesting that the pandemic was far more severe than initially reported.
This situation presented a poignant conflict between two values: truth and loyalty. On one hand, I felt a strong obligation to uphold the value of truth by ensuring that my colleagues received accurate information about the pandemic. On the other, I felt a loyalty to my organization and its leadership, which was intent on maintaining a specific narrative to protect its public image and minimize anxiety among employees.

Resolution of the Conflict


After much deliberation, I chose to prioritize truth over loyalty. I gathered data from reputable sources such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to create a communication that presented a more accurate depiction of the situation. I presented this communication to my supervisor, emphasizing the importance of transparency in fostering trust and ensuring employee safety.
While this decision estranged me from some members of leadership who were loyal to the original narrative, it led to a more comprehensive understanding among my colleagues about the seriousness of the pandemic. The transparency encouraged employees to take necessary precautions, thus preventing potential health crises within the organization.

Consequences of My Decision


The decision to uphold truth over loyalty had both benefits and harms.

Benefits:


1. Enhanced Trust: By encouraging transparency, I fostered an environment of trust. Employees were more willing to engage in conversations about safety protocols and health guidelines (Brewer, 2020).

However, I could have benefitted from applying the Four-Component Model of ethical decision-making (Rest, 1986), which involves moral sensitivity, moral judgment, moral motivation, and moral character. Engaging further in this model might have helped me better anticipate the potential resistance from leadership and plan a more diplomatic approach.

What Alternatively Could I Have Done?


Reflecting on my decision, I realize that advocating for truth need not conflict with loyalty to the organization. I could have approached the leadership in a more constructive manner by framing my concerns about the narrative in a way that aligned with the organization’s core values. Engaging in a dialogue rather than presenting my communication as a challenge may have led to a more collaborative outcome (Lennick & Kiel, 2016).
Furthermore, seeking out allies within the organization who shared my concerns might have provided additional support and context for my message, creating a collective voice advocating for transparency. I could have proposed a phased approach to communication, where risk assessments were discussed and gradually presented to employees alongside supportive resources, which might have alleviated some of the fears of panic.

Conclusion


In conclusion, my experience during the COVID-19 pandemic illustrates the complex and often conflicting nature of ethical values within the workplace. My resolution to prioritize truth over loyalty resulted in a positive impact on employee safety but also led to strained relationships within the organization. Reflecting on ethical decision-making frameworks provides valuable insights into how I might approach similar situations differently in the future, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and collaboration.
