Part 2: Rationale
The rationale behind implementing this action plan is rooted in the growing emphasis on communication skills in the modern workplace. A survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE, 2023) identified communication skills as the most sought-after qualities by employers. By actively working to improve these skills among students, we can enhance both their academic performance and their employability post-graduation.
Moreover, research indicates that collaborative learning comes with numerous benefits, including increased academic achievement, enhanced social skills, and improved critical thinking abilities (Johnson & Johnson, 2019). Our strategy aligns with these findings by promoting social learning environments through peer mentorship and collaborative projects, which allows students to enhance their communication skills in practical contexts.
In addition, providing structured opportunities for practice through workshops and forums will empower students to become more confident communicators. It has been shown that structured practice environments contribute positively to skill acquisition and retention (Ericsson, Krampe, & Tesch-Römer, 2022).
Furthermore, the showcase at the end of the year serves as a motivational tool, allowing students to put their skills to the test and receive feedback from professionals, an invaluable experience that merges theoretical learning with real-world applications (Walker, 2021).
By utilizing a multi-faceted approach with short-term goals designed to build towards our long-term vision, we believe this Action Plan can significantly enhance the collaboration and communication skills of our students.
