Change is inherently challenging, especially concerning ingrained habits like excessive screen time. Acknowledging the difficulties is vital. From personal experience, it could take several weeks to months of consistent effort to alter this behavior permanently. Habit formation and behavior change models suggest that commitment and self-monitoring can lead to significant changes, but various barriers persist.
Some barriers include easy access to screens, societal norms encouraging digital connectedness, and the addictive nature of technology (Davis et al., 2020). My attempts have often faltered due to busy schedules, leading to quick but unhealthy reliance on screens for relaxation and social interaction.
While the negative consequences of excessive screen time are well documented, the positives of reducing it include improved mental health, enhanced social interactions (as alternative engagement activities are pursued), and better sleep habits. However, the fear of missing out and social isolation can emerge from this adjustment.
