This course has substantially enriched my understanding of criminal law and provided clarity on my aspirations in the criminal justice system. Initially, I enrolled in this program with the primary goal of becoming a law enforcement officer. However, the comprehensive coverage of criminal responsibility, defenses, prosecution, and jurisdiction has illuminated the intricate tapestry of ethics, law, and social justice that underpins our justice system. I now appreciate how these dimensions intersect, influencing both my personal values and my career trajectory. Learning about contemporary issues such as human trafficking has particularly opened my eyes to the necessity of a holistic approach in law enforcement practices. The course has underscored the importance of not only enforcing laws but also understanding the socio-economic and psychological factors that contribute to crime, enabling me to advocate for more humane and effective interventions in my future role. This new lens primes me to pursue not just a position within law enforcement, but potentially a role that emphasizes policy reform or community engagement, aimed at fostering positive social change (Reed, 2023; Smith & Jones, 2021).
As for how the law enforcement community can implement positive social change, one pivotal avenue lies in community policing and restorative justice practices. Through examples drawn from the course discussions, it has been evident that building trustful relationships within the community can significantly alter public perceptions of law enforcement.
