In particular, I am intrigued by how organizations utilize digital tools to enhance humanitarian responses, especially in crisis situations.

Digital humanitarianism refers to the use of digital technologies to support humanitarian efforts. It includes various elements such as crowd-sourcing information, utilizing social media to coordinate relief efforts, and employing data analytics to improve the delivery of assistance. In class, we explored how platforms like the United Nations’ digital response teams use technology to monitor disaster-stricken areas and coordinate volunteers’ efforts. The resources provided, such as the PBS online video on innovations in humanitarian relief, emphasize the transformative potential of digital media in modern-day humanitarian work.

Digital humanitarianism is highly relevant in a course on digital and social media, as it illustrates how these platforms and tools can mobilize action and effectiveness in humanitarian contexts.
