A_8^16O^2- ion has protons neutrons and electrons 8, 8, 6 8, 10, 10 8, 8, 10 8, 8, 8 8, 16, 8 What is the nuclide symbol for the ion that has a charge of 2+, 50 neutrons more than its number of and an atomic number equal to the number of electrons in a zirconium atom that has lost 2 electron_50^72 Sn^2+_38^88 Sr^2+_40^90 Zr^2+_40^90 Zr^2-_38^90 Sr^2+ What is the correct formula for the compound formed between sodium and iodine based on their the periodic table? Na_2I NaI_2 NaI Na_2I_2 Na_3I What is the charge on the iron ion in FeCl_3? -3 +3 -1 +1 0

Explanation / Answer

Answer – 1) We are given oxygen atom with 2- charge and mass number is 16. So symbol for this one is 168O2-, we know atomic number is equal to proton number for atom or charged species. The number of neutrons are equal to the mass number minus proton number. Electron number is equal to the number of proton or atomic number for neutral atom and for negative charged atom we need to add the number of negative charge in the proton number and if positive charge then we need to subtract from the proton number.

So, 168O2- ion has 8 protons, 8 neutrons and 10 electrons. Answer is option c.

2) We are given the charge 2+ and neutrons 50 which are more than its number of proton. It atomic number is equal to the number of electrons in a zirconium atom that lost 2 electrons.

We know the Zr atom has number of electrons is equal to its atomic number. So Zr has 40 electrons and when it lost 2 electrons means 38 electrons, so the nuclide is with 38 atomic number and has 2+ charge. We know atomic number 38 is for strontium atoms and there are 50 neutron number, so mass number is 38+50 = 88

So answer is b) 8838Sr2+

3) We know sodium from the ion with +1 charge and iodine is formed ion with -1 charge, since sodium has 1 electron in its outer most shell, so for complete the octet it lost the 1 electron and from the +1 charge. For iodine there are 7 electrons in the valance shell, so it gains one electrons and from the -1 charge for completing its octet.

So, sodium and iodine is formed compound c) NaI.

4) We are given the compound FeCl3 and we know one Cl has -1 charge and sum of the charge on the compound is zero, since compound is neutral. So the charge on iron is as follow –

Fe + (3*-1) = 0

Fe = +3

So answer is b) +3
