Question
I only have one question left for the month, so that's why there's more than one. Lots of my questions were wasted on asking something that got incorrect responses several times. I promise to thumbs up your answer though if you help a girl out!!
1) What is the formula for radon gas? To what group of elements does it belong?
2) What is the oxidation number of hydrogen in AIH3, in H2S?
3) Write chemical equations to show the two commercial methods of preparation of H2(g).
4) Coke is used to rduce Fe2O3 in iron production. What is it? How can it be converted to graphite?
Explanation / Answer
(1) Formula for radon gas is Rn.Its atomic number is 86 & it belongs to Zero group or 18th group in the periodic table.
(2) We know that sum of the oxidation states of the elements in a molecules is equal to the charge on the molecule
In AlH3 the oxidation state of Al is +3
So Let a be the oxidation state of H then +3 +3(a) = 0
a = -1
So the oxidation number of H is -1
In H2S the oxidation state of S is -2
So Let a be the oxidation state of H then 2(a) +(-2) = 0
a = +1
So the oxidation number of H is +1
(3) Commercial methods of prepartion of Hydrogen gas
a) It is prepared by the electrolysis of water
2H2O(l) ----> 2H2(g) + O2(g)
(b) The alkali metals( like lithium, sodium, potassium) react violently with water at the ordinary temperature yields hydrogen gas
2Li(s) + 2H2O(l) ----> H2(g) + 2LiOH(aq)
(4) Coke is a fuel with few impurities and a high carbon content, usually made from coal.
Coke can be converted into graphite - sorry for this i have no idea
