Question
Inorganic chemistry lab explanation! I am doing a synthesis of Pentaammineaquacobalt(III) chloride experiment in my inorganic lab. My problem is, I know how to follow direction but I do not understand why I am adding reagents.
Here is the chemical equation: 2CoCl2•6H2O + 2NH4Cl +8NH3 +H2O2 -> 2[Co(NH3)5H2O]Cl2 +12H2O
The procedure calls to dissolve NH4Cl and CoCl2•6H2O together in distilled water. Then it said to add concentrated NH3 and gave a dark orange-red color, and then it said to add the H2O2. When the H2O2 was added, the solution became a dark red-brown solution. The solution was then aspirated for an hour and a half. HCl was added afterwards. Can someone briefly explain to me, on a molecular scale, what is going on when I added the reagents in each step? Why is there no heat added, and why was concentrated ammonia added after dissolving CoCl2•6H2O and NH4Cl together?
i will rate and comment on your post so that your efforts are not wasted. Thank you so much in advance!
Explanation / Answer
Hello friends,
Todays studied the inorganic prepartion for why are use the reagent in the chemical reaction because an inorganic compound is prepared from the metal ion solution, when it reacts with a complexing agent under certain controlled condition like pH, temperature etc.
Generally, preparation of a compound is based on the properties of reactants. the reactions involved in these preparations are quantitative and precipitation type of reactions taking place in stoichiometric proportions.
Firstlly, NH4Cl and CoCl2•6H2O react to form its derivative but again use ammonia because ammonia is very basic medium and increase the colour intensity(dark orange-red color) of the solution.
When the H2O2 was added, the solution became a dark red-brown solution - As before discuss about ammonia solution to form amminated cobalt complex then you have to use H2O2 to give the replacement of one ammonia molecule by H2O therefore the affect of solution became a dark red-brown solution. the process of the reaction is very slow to form the prepared compoud require the one hour. HCl is used to disolve some impurity to form desired product.
there no heat added, and why was concentrated ammonia added - both compound are in same phase as well as ammonia is concentrated and hightly basic in nature, do not require heat.
