Explanation / Answer

1. Oxidation is the process which involves the addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen and according to the electronic concept, the reaction which involves loss of electrons.
Eg. i) Fe + O2 ---> Fe2O3

ii) Fe+2 ---> Fe+3 + e-

Oxidising agents are the substances which cause the oxidation of other substances and itself get reduced. So, compounds in their highest oxidation states work as the best oxidising agents as they have only the possibility of getting reduced and not oxidized. Eg. KMnO4where Mn is in its highest oxidation state +7, K2Cr2O7 where Cr is in its highest oxidation state +3.

KMnO 4 ----> Mn+2 + 5e-

K2Cr2O7 ----> 2Cr +3 + 6e-

2. The reduction reaction is the addition of hydrogen or removal of oxygen or addition of electrons.

e.g. i) Cu+2 + 2 e- ----> Cu

ii) Fe2O3 + 2 Al ----> Al2O3 + 2 Fe here Fe is getting reduced and Al is getting oxidised and Al behaves as Reducing agent.

H2O2 and H2/Ni are common reducing agents.

3. Green Chemistry is basically the branch of chemistry which concentrates on minimizing the use of toxic and hazardous chemicals or production of these in chemical reactions.
