Question

I have done the drawing and the measurements. Could you look at my data and answer the questions on the last part, if it was what we expexted to find and if it is why, if it is different why? Please help with explaination.

7. Soon you will be learning about cyclic compounds. Using Chem3D draw cyclopropane, cyclobutane, and cyclohexane. Measure the angles first. Then minimize the energy and record the new angles. The hybridization of each carbon is sp3. What are the angles that you would expect to find? Are they the same or different? Why? tions Chair conformation

Explanation / Answer

The expected or ideal bond angle is 109.5. But due to angle stain (ring strain) in cyclohenxanes (small in size), the bond angle deviates from the ideal angle. As the size of ring increases, the ring strain decreases and bond angle is more close to the ideal angle. The more deviation of bond angle in smaller cyclohexanes is due to poor overlapping of atomic orbitals. So, basically expected angles would be 109.5 but the value is different from observed value due to angle strain (ring strain) in mentioned cycloalkane molecules.
