Question

Charles's Law:

a.) A sample of krypton gas at a pressure of 1.02 atm and a temperature of 167 oC, occupies a volume of 587 mL. If the gas is heated at constant pressure until its volume is 849 mL, the temperature of the gas sample will be __________oC.

b.) A sample of methane gas at a pressure of 683 mm Hg and a temperature of 79 oC, occupies a volume of 13.4 liters. If the gas is cooled at constant pressure to a temperature of 29 oC, the volume of the gas sample will be __________L.

c.) A sample of helium gas at a pressure of 1.06 atm and a temperature of 169 oC, occupies a volume of 836 mL. If the gas is heated at constant pressure until its volume is 1.13 x 103 mL, the temperature of the gas sample will be __________oC.

Explanation / Answer

a)

we have:

T1 = 167.0 oC

= (167.0+273) K

= 440 K

V1 = 587 mL

V2 = 849 mL

we have below equation to be used:

V1/T1 = V2/T2

587.0 mL / 440.0 K = 849.0 mL / T2

T2 = 636.3884 K

T2 = 363 oC

Answer: 363 oC

b)

we have:

V1 = 13.4 L

T1 = 79.0 oC

= (79.0+273) K

= 352 K

T2 = 29.0 oC

= (29.0+273) K

= 302 K

we have below equation to be used:

V1/T1 = V2/T2

13.4 L / 352.0 K = V2 / 302.0 K

V2 = 11.5 L

Answer: 11.5 L

c)

we have:

T1 = 169.0 oC

= (169.0+273) K

= 442 K

V1 = 836 mL

V2 = 1130 mL

we have below equation to be used:

V1/T1 = V2/T2

836.0 mL / 442.0 K = 1130.0 mL / T2

T2 = 597.4402 K

T2 = 324 oC

Answer: 324 oC
