Question

Please please please answer this question fully and please answer it only if you're 100% of the correct answer! When 23.00 mL of unknown were passed through a Jones reductor, molybdate ion (Moo42 was converted into Mo3+ The filtrate required 16.42 mL of 0.01034 M KMno4 to reach the purple end point. Mno4 Mo 3+ Mn 2+. MoO2 2+ A blank required 0.07 mL. Balance the reaction. (Use the lowest possible whole number coefficients. Omit states of matter from your answer.) Help chemPad Greek Find the molarity of molybdate in the unknown. Supporting Materials

Explanation / Answer

The balanced reaction is :

3MnO4- + 5Mo3+ + 4H+ ----> 3Mn2+ + 5MoO22+ +2H2O

Volume of KMnO4 reacted with Mo3+ is , V = Total volume - volume reacted with blanck

= 16.42 - 0.07 mL

= 16.35 mL

= 16.35x10-3 L

So the number of moles of KMnO4 reacted is , n = Molarity x volume in L

= 0.01034 M x 16.35x10-3 L

= 1.69x10-4 mol

From this equation ,

3 moles of KMnO4 reacts with 5 moles of Mo3+

1.69x10-4 mol of KMnO4 reacts with M moles of Mo3+

M = ( 1.69x10-4 x 5 ) /3

= 2.82x10-4 mol

So Molarity of Molbdate , M = Number of moles / volume in L

= (2.82x10-4 mol) / (23.00 mLx10-3 L/mL)

= 0.0122 M

Therefore the molarity of moybdate is 0.0122 M
