Question

Consider the following situation: Three years later, Sally Student returns to see Angie Instructor. After sharing many adorable baby pictures, Sally admits she is appreciative now that she was proscribed from wet chemistry in Chem 112, and explains why. Sally said she was shocked when she was in the doctor’s office and heard the test results for her sickly child definitively indicating lead poisoning. As the doctor explained that her house remodeling project probably was the source of her child’s elevated blood level for lead, Sally recalled immediately the first alternative exercise was for her to read, then write a paper on “What Every Chemist Should Know About Teratogens – Chemicals that Cause Birth Defects”. Sally went on to say that her child was completely out of danger health wise, as the means to accomplish the remodeling project were completely revised upon researching better ways to removing lead based paint in older homes.

First Post: Discuss at least one social justice issue related to lead poisoning world wide.

Explanation / Answer

Lead found primarily in paint and water pipes is a danger to young children and pregnant women. It cause learning disorders, developmental delays, neurologic changes etc.In most of the cases lead poisoning can be avoided .Pb poisoning occur in lower income communities made up of families of color ,making it an issue of social justice.children are not uniformly exposed to lead. The age of the child, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and age of housing all play a role in exposure to and development of childhood lead poisoning.Often low income communities of color are found in older suburbs.older infrastructure is most likely to have lead in it:lead in soil from lead containing fuels, lead in paint, lead smelters etc. These communities are living in places that are in disrepair. If there is a lead in paint and its a old hhome ,peeling paint means exposure to lead.Lead poisoning is a symptom of disvestment and a failure to invest in urban and poor communities. The failure occurs because these communities are not valued. These communities are already facing marginalization and isolation. If some basic level is suffering from disrepair the owner of the properties dont invest in maintenance. In this part of city they never got around to changing the pipes. In schools they have older facilitiesand paints has never been remediated. So basically suffering from lack of investment..In addition and on the top dont have consistenr medical care, so no one conducts maternal or child testing for lead exposure.somehow these people are not seen as worthy of investment.People living these areas are trapped in a cycle where no one is collecting the data, acting on the data or generally caring about the situation.
