Reform in healthcare is required for 4 reasons-
Firstly, health care expenses have been rising steeply. In year 2011, the mean expenditure for a family of 4 rose by 7.3 %, to 19,393 dollars. This was double of what it cost 9 years prior to that. By year 2030, it is anticipated that payroll taxation will only meet 38 % of Medicare expenses. The remaining will add on to the federal budgetary deficit.
Secondly, reform will enhance the healthcare quality. Majority of citizens are surprised to learn that their nation has the worst health care among the developed countries. Chronic sicknesses cause 70 % of all deaths & impact 45 % of all citizens. As the populace ages, the prevalence of these illnesses will increase rapidly.
By year 2023, cancer will rise by 50 %, heart disease by 40 %. Every year, the expenditure of treatment equals 1.7 trillion dollars, signifying 75 % of all health care funds spent. This can be lessened via illness prevention & wellness initiatives.
Thirdly, reform was required as nearly 25 % of citizens had little / no health insurance to cover their expenses. 101,000 persons died per annum only because they did not have an insurance.
Healthcare expenses could wipe out an individual’s savings . Many would have to go without treatment as they could not afford it. This is also not good for the economy. For instance, 50% of all bankruptcies stem from heavy medical expenses.
Lastly, reform is required to stem the financial expenses of health care deception . 60 billion dollars - 200 billion dollars is lost to deception per annum.
