Dendrochronology is the dating and study of annual rings in tree.

Tree rings are caused by different growth rates of the tree. They grow more slowly in the winter so they are annual tree rings. They also grow less because of climate conditions and other factors. It is useful as a way of establishing past climates that were beneficial to growing.

It doesn't however tell you what the temperature was as was done by Michael Mann in his bogus hockey stick AGW propaganda campaign. It is more useful for saying how much moisture there was that year but it is also affected by several other factors including insects, clouds, humidity, length of summer, fire....
