Question

Food colors are usually available in small containers from which they can be dispensed drop-wise into water. Using such colors, prepare a set of lightly tinted solutions in ordinary drinking glasses, filled about three -quarters full. Now stir a little activated carbon powder, of the type used for aquariums into each glass. The carbon may be purchased from a pet shop, drugstore, or hobby shop. Place a saucer over each glass and allow the carbon to settle over night. Note the effectiveness with which the colored impurities are removed. Describe the results: Design and carry out a series of experiments to determine how much carbon is needed to remove a given amount of dye. Describe your results: Are all the dyes equally easy to remove? Describe your results:

Explanation / Answer

Ans- a- the carbon can remove the dye stain by oxidation. It remove electrons or electrolytes by oxidisation. The quantity of the carbon used for the removal of stain depends on the dye used and the carbon source used.

Ans-B- all dyes can't be removed equally with the help of the carbon because different dyes have different solubility and interaction with the carbon so their removal will also be different.
