Question
In his 2015 Papal Encyclical, Laudato Si’, in which he addresses climate change and our collective responsibility to care for our “common home,” Pope Francis , S.J., observes that, “Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political, and for the distribution of goods.”
Prompt 1 question:
Much has been written about the environmental implications of climate change, but less about the distribution of goods or the social, economic, and political implications. Which one of these less studied aspects of climate change seems to you most worrisome for our “common home,” and why?
Explanation / Answer
Among the social, economic, and political implications, I will be worried about the economic implications of the climate change. This is because the economic and political implications are by and large tied to economic implication. For e.g. – If the sea levels begin to rise due to climate change and part of land gets submerged, the mankind will get displaced. This would imply not only the cost in terms of loss of land but also loss of livelihood for those employed there. To put it in another way, these people who will be displaced due to climate change will relocate and hence a mass migration could impact the social and political environment of the world. There is little govt. can do if such a crisis happens and hence the only way would be to start now before it’s too late.
