Question
The second photo is my answer towards half the first question, so based on that, please finish the whole question. 1.) Boston Harbor The vast majority of people claim that the Boston Harbor Cleanup has been a great success a.) Please pick a specific pa rameter that demonstrates that the condition of Boston Harbor is better than it was 25 years ago (and cite the source of this data). Present this data and explain why this data supports your claim that Boston Harbor is better now. How are ecosystem functions improved? (5 points) b.) What could you do in the future to further increase the quality of Boston Harbor with respect to your parameter? What could levels of the parameter given above be like 25 years into the future. How clean can Boston Harbor become (with respect to your measurement)? What controls the trajectory of this parameter? Please be specific. (5 points) 2 43,3000 2sc 6,600
Explanation / Answer
Boston Harbour cleanup has been celebrated as America's greatest environmental achievements. There are numerous physical, chemical, and biological parameters that can be used to demonstrate that the cleanup was successful. Since you have chosen fecal coliform as the parameter to focus on, we will stick to it.
There are some parts of the first half that is missing in the answer given. That is,
b.)
The USEPA standards say, 'The geometric mean of the value for effluent samples collected in a period of 30 consecutive days shall not exceed 200 per 100 ml'. It is already 9.5 and hence there is no more need improve the quality of water with regard to this parameter as there is already tertiary advanced treatment available for the incoming water. These tertiary treatments need to be monitored more carefully into the future so that the contaminated water will not enter the harbour. However, drinking water standards suggest that there should be no coliform in the 100ml tested, there needs to be a pre-treatment of this water before using it for drinking purpose. The simple boiling process of UV disinfection will work. Addition of extra chlorine to reduce the coliform count in the harbour is not recommended as it also kills bacteria essential to the proper balance of the aquatic environment, and will impact the aquatic life. 25 years into the future, the count of fecal coliform could be zero as the treatment process strengthens further. The self-cleaning mechanism in water can take care of any small level of contamination. The amount of fecal coliform is dependant upon many factors such as the location (distance from the human settlement, industrial area, etc.,), the parameters such as pH, temperature, suspended solids, organic and inorganic nutrients in the water, precipitation in the are, topography, subsurface flow etc. Among all these, the location and precipitation are the most crucial factors that impact the trajectory of this parameter along with the level of treatment.
