Question
For the purposes of the questions given below, assume that the cores of three separate trees have been collected for a study region in mountainous part of New Mexico (see core data below). Tree #1 is a tree that is still living today, and the wide lat right is its most recent growth band beneath tree bark (corresponding Trees #2 and #3 have been lying dead for many years, each was found in a different location within 100 m of Tree #1, Tree #3 was found in to summer, 2017). association with rubble accumulated during a local rockslide event, and this tree (#3) is believed to have been killed by this mass-wasting event. 7, If the belief that Tree #3 was killed by a local rockslide is correct, in what year did that rockslide likely take place? (hint: use the technique of crossdating to build a basic chronological record of tree growth in the region; using scissors, the cores can be cut out of the following page and used for visual correlation of bands). Please briefly describe the steps you followed to come up with your answer. (5 points)Explanation / Answer
Annaul rings or the rings present beneath the bark of the tree tell us about trees' age. New ring is added to the tree with each passing year that means that a tree's age can be calculated by counting the number of rings present inside the bark.
Now differential reading of the rings of two different trees can be used to know about the number of years the living tree have survived after the fall of the other tree. This theory can be used because trees don not produce any wood after they fell down and since they are not producing any wood hence their growth will stop after they die and hence no increase in rings takes place.
In order to use this technique the trees should be from the same time that means their germination should take place simultaneously, now in this problem tree#3 and tree#1 are within 100 meters hence we can assume that they are both contemporary in age.
Therefore the year in which rockslide took place = 2017 - (The difference in the rings of tree#1 and tree#3) .
