II. Assignment

Time Periods

Answer the following questions using the data Table 1, and the Era’s numbered as in the table. Make sure to show all calculations.

If Era (1) occurred 4.6 billion years ago from today, how long ago did Era (9) end?

If Era (1) occurred 4.6 billion years ago from today, how long ago did Era (8) end?

About how many years ago did some of the earliest life on Earth form?

About how many years did it take after Era (8) for there to be oceans on Earth?

How many years were there between Era (5) and the end of Era (8)?

If 81 objects around the size of our Moon collided in order to form Earth during the time period in (E.), roughly how many years went by between these impact events (if they were evenly spaced out).

Explanation / Answer

Total time passed is 4.6 billion years.

The Era 9 ended 600 millions years ago so Era (9) ended 4 billion years ago. (4.6-0.6)

The Era 8 ended 100 millions years ago so Era (8) ended 4.5 billion years ago.(4.6 -0.1)

The first trace of life in fossil is found 800 millions so the first life form was formed 3.8 billion years ago (4.6 -0.8)

The oceans are formed in Era (10) which occurred 600 million years ago so the gap between Era (8) and Era (10) is 500 million years (600-100)

The Era (5) started at 51 million years and Era (8) ended just before 600 million years so the years between were 549 million years.
