Question
I knew all the answers already. Please tell explanations of why the answers is correct.
1.Under which circumstance would frost (via deposition) form?
a.Dew point temperature: 28°F; Anticipated low temperature 30°F
b.Dew point temperature: 30°F; Anticipated low temperature 26°F
c.Dew point temperature: 34°F; Anticipated low temperature 34°F
d.Dew point temperature: 34°F; Anticipated low temperature 26°F
2.In Havana, Cuba (23.11° N, 82.37° W), from which primary direction do you expect weather systems to move?
a.Northwest
b.Northeast
c. Southwest
d.Southeast
3.Which type of precipitation begins as rainfall but freezes to solid as it falls through sub-freezing temperatures closer to the surface?
a. Freezing Rain
b. Snow
c.Sleet
d.Hail
Explanation / Answer
1. Answer. B. Depositional frost occurs when the dew point temperature is below the Freezing i.e. below 32 degree Fahrenheit. In options c and d the dew point temperature is above the Freezing point so they are not qualified for this condition. In option a the the anticipated low temperature is above the dew point so the depositional frost will not occur. Option B is correct as the temperature of dew point is below frost and the anticipated low temperature is below dew point so water vapor will directly go into solid making depositional frost.
2.a.Northwest. Cuba lies just above the equator line and due to coriolis effect and earths rotation the air around equator gets pulled towards the center line and moves from east to west. Since Cuba is above the equator line the wind moves from north to west.
3. a,b and c all three starts as the snowflake and changes before reaching the surface. But hail is in the form of rainfall and due to thunderstorm it changes in to the hails so it is the only option where the precipitation starts as rainfall. In all other options Freezing rain, snow and sleet the precipitation starts as the snowfall and changes the form.
