Question
Instructions: Print out this assignment and complete the following questions. Due: Monday 10/30 at the beginning of class. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED: 1. What controls how easily gas escapes from magma? 2. Are the following statements true (T) or false (F) Felsic lava has a low viscosity If the dissolved gas in a lava decreases, the viscosity decreases. Felsic lavas will likely build steep sided volcanoes Mafic lava will likely produce explosive eruptions. VIf the silica content increases, the viscosity decreases. Examine the picture to the right of Lassen Peak and answer the following questions: 3. i. What plate boundary does this volcano form? ii. What continental volcanic arc does this volcano form? What type of eruption style of these volcanoes? . Lassen Peak is a NOT a composite volcano. What type of volcano is Lassen Peak? v. Describe the likely composition and viscosity of the magma? Composition Viscosity: 4. Examine the picture to the right of Skjaldbreidur volcano on Iceland to answer the following questions: i. What zone of volcanism does this volcano originate from? ii What type of eruption style does this volcano produce? What are two volcanic eruption products that citizens should be concerned about the most?Explanation / Answer
1. The viscosity of magma controls how easily the gas will escape the magma. If the magma is less viscous then gas will escape easily where as if magma is very dense then gas can get trapped inside.
2.
i) False. Felsic lava has hi viscosity.
ii) False.
iii) True. As the felsic lava ha high viscosity it as tendency to make steep sided volcano.
iv) False. Felsic lava eruptions are more explosive
v) False. Higher the silica content, higher will be the viscosity.
Please ask the rest of the questions in separate questionnaire.
