Question

Book review: The Hobbit

Point of view is who tells the story: the main character, some other characters, or an impersonal and objective teller? Is there any information given about the narrator’s gender, class, age or race?

The setting is when and where the story happens. Here you might want to answer questions like: Where does the story take place? Does it take place in another country or an imaginary place? Does it take place a long time ago or now? How is the story told? Is it told chronologically, from the end to the beginning, or are there flashes backward (and forward)?

Characters are who the story is about. The main character is called the protagonist. Tell who the protagonist is and answer questions like: Who are the other important characters? Do they help or hinder the protagonist? How are they described? Do they change during the course of the novel?

Theme is why the story is written. It is about the main idea of the book. Some examples of theme can be friendship, family, jealousy, etc. Tell what the writer will convey to the reader.

Plot is what happens in the story. Tell what the story is mostly about and answer questions like: What is the main event or conflict? What is the cause of the conflict and how is it solved? Try not to simply retell the story or give away the ending.

Explanation / Answer

THE HOBBIT was written by J.R.R TOLKIEN in which BILBO(hero) goes on a miraculous journey alongside with thirteen dwarves and the story is about their journey and the foes which appeared along their way.

Many do think that hobbit book falls under children's category but trust me even adults can well find it amusing. To be honest hobbit is one kind of book which cues from narrative model of children's literature but seriously the book has got perfect mixture of all blends like fantasy, adventure and suspense as well. The major advantage of this book is that the introductions happen in a very casual manner so even little kids can understand easily.

This particular masterpiece is a great adventure to be honest and my personal favorite is BILBO. Who is a hobbit and who don't like adventures and more into relaxing all the time. Compared to others BILBO was highly respected hobbit. He easily gets annoyed at other dwarves because they were always dying for treasure.

SMAUG is the dragon of the lonely mountain and Antagonist of the tale and he is very feared till the end of his journey. He doesn't appear much throughout the story but his very existence looms particularly his attack on lonely mountain displaced entire people around several towns.

The theme of the story lies within BILBO who grows in identity, who was really shy at first but all the way through his journey from adventures he starts to gain courage and also save his friends too. As the story goes on he gets wisdom in choosing good decisions also try to maintain peace between them.

I'm surprised by the fact that Tolkien actually wrote this book for his own children and he never really intended to publish it. In my opinion Tolkien has managed to create an artful work of literature in this particular book. Of course FANTASY became common element in most literature works in 20th century and this very same fantasy concept made THE HOBBIT an successful fantasy novel.
