Question

Hey! I would just like a quick hand answering this question. I've got a general idea of how it works but I'm having trouble putting a scientific explanation behind it.

a) If equal amounts of water were poured into each of the four containers, which material do you think would permit the greatest amount of water to pass through the graduated cylinder? Rank your prediction (I predicted B-A-C-D but I am unsure)

b) In a few sentences, explain your reasoning for such ranking.

c) Which material will transmit water the fastest and slowest. Elaborate the rationale for both

d) which materials transmitted the most waster? Which retained the most water. Elaborate the rationale for both.

e) what properties of materials are correlated with good water transmission? Which are correlated with water retardation and retention?

Explanation / Answer

Answer a : A >B>C>D or in other words Gravel > Sand> Silt > clay

Answer b : Explanation: A consist of very large size grain so it means the voids between the grain are also large and hence greater connectivity so A passed most than B and then followed by C and D

Answer c: As I have already said that Voids of A are large and interconnected so they pass the water fastest or in other words provide the least resistance to flow of water.

Answer d: A will transmit more and d will retain more

Answer e: The D is clay particle which has charge surface and makes bond with water and not let it to pass or retain the water moreover the size of the pore(void between grain) in the material is very small and provide more resistance than A material.
