E14.7 Erosional Processes and Shoreline Landfor Name: Section: Course: Refer to photos earlier in this chapter to answer the following questions. (a) How did the large blocks in Figure 14.10a get into the surf zone? What is their eventual fate? Date (b) How did Morro Rock (Fig. 14.13b) become isolated from the bedrock shoreline? (c) What is the eventual fate of the sea arch in 14.10c? Examine the shoreline in FIGURE 14.14. Point Sur and False Sur are the same kind of feature and record a multistage development for this part of the California shoreline.

Explanation / Answer

First we should understand the processes of formation of coastal landforms, the ones shown in the figures. Waves constantly stikes the coast with great momentum. When the dip is high and the strike is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation, the effect of wave erosion will be maximum.

A) As the waves hit the headland, constant erosion will cut a notch in the elevated landform. After prolonged extension of the notch, the landmass above it will collapse. This is how large blocks got into the surf zone. Eventually these blocks will get eroded by waves and currents, finally forming fine silt.

C) The eventual fate of the sea arch is that it will collapse.

Explanation- As waves passes through the arch further expanding it sideways, the top of the arch will collapse under its own weight. This would leave behind an isolated stack. This stack will fall in the sea and all that would be left is a stump.

Part B was not answered because we cudnt get access to fig 14.13. However we would be glad to answere the question once you upload the required figure.
