Question
Identify the behavioural effect at work in the following examples, and provide a brief explanation.
a) Joseph went to the market and was willing to pay up to $100 for a new lawnmower, but found them to be sold out at the store. Upon returning home his father was present with the gift of a new lawnmower. Joseph’s neighbour offered him $120 for Joseph’s newly acquired lawnmower and Joseph refused.
b) Valerie has happily worked alone on a salary of $90,000 per year. She has been transferred to an office with a similar worker who makes $105,000 per year. Valerie became dissatisfied and demanded a raise.
Explanation / Answer
a.
Emotional behavior: Mr. J wanted an instrument by paying $100. He didn’t get that in the market. The required instrument is given by his father as a gift. Once he received the gift, his requirement turns into emotional attachment. Due to this reason he refuses to sell it although there is a higher price, $120. The gift item becomes priceless to him.
b.
Complex behavior: This is a clear case of inferiority complex. V worked alone previously and didn’t get chance to compare her salary. One she is transferred her complex grows, since she has lower salary than others.
