Question

In Defense of Food is as much about finding truly healthy eating habits as it is about enjoying food. The path to accomplishing this is not only to buy less food, but to ensure that food is of better quality. In other words, we need to buy more “real” food. Real food can be more expensive, but buying less not only mitigates monetary cost, but also enforces portion control. Pollan suggests that we shouldn’t follow scientific trends and consume food based on which nutrients are currently all the rage. Rather, we should focus on ecology and tradition to inform our dietary choices.

Explanation / Answer

IN DEFENSE OF FOOD was written by MICHAEL POLLAN who is an American author and professor of journalism and also prolific writer on food related issues. Through this particular book Pollan explores a cure for today's industrially driven western diet.

My favorite line in this book is "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants". Author makes another good point that "healthful food sometimes may cost more, but in the long run if the food keeps you healthy it pays off". These points make good sense and completely agree with author because the primary purpose of eating is to maintain good health.

Pollan strongly argues that NUTRITIONISM has greatly affected American eating habits. Nutritionism is entirely different from nutrients and it is not something scientific subject but in fact it is an IDEOLOGY. I pretty much like the concept not to eat the products whose ingredients you cannot pronounce.

I personally found this book very helpful because I'm a type of person who believe that health is really connected to what we eat. And this book changed the way I think about food. I strongly recommend this book to my friends because I do bet that seriously the book can change our behavior and way of understanding. Also this book can create some desire to improve our personal health.
