Question
Partisan considerations have increasingly influenced the selection of federal judges. Interest groups on the right and the left have insisted on the appointment of judges who hold compatible views. Presidents and members of Congress have also increasingly sought appointees who will decide issues in ways they prefer. What is your view? Should politics play such a large role in judicial appointments? Or should merit be given greater weight? Does a merit based system favor ONLY those with money and the connections?
Explanation / Answer
Judicial appointments have always been politically influenced, The appointment of judges ofcourse hinders the notion of independent judiciary
Judicial appointments must always be independent, It is very important to take examples of some countries like Pakistan which have descended into complete chaos just becasue their top judges were appointed, Infact pakistan supreme court has killed democacy in last decades just because their judges choose to do so,
Judiciary is all powerful, It can pass an order and every one in the state has to obey it, The de-merits of appointment of bad judges by politicians can be dangerously high.
In United States appointment of judges is done by even raising funds for the elections, This is a very bad system which involves judges asking for donations such practice must be abolised all together,
