Question

A wave with a frequency f and wavelength ? is traveling along a string at a speed v. Evaluate each of the following statements.
1. Increase Decrease or Stay the same  What happens to the wavelength if the frequency is decreased while keeping the speed constant?
2.Increase Decrease or Stay the same  What happens to the frequency if the speed is increased while keeping the wavelength the same?
3. Increase Decrease or Stay the same  What happens to the wavelength if the speed and frequency are both cut in half?
4. Increase Decrease or Stay the same  What has happened to the speed of the wave if the wavelength is doubled while the frequency is kept constant?

Explanation / Answer

1) The wavelength increases when the f decreases while v stays the same.
You might notice that the wavelength moves opposite the frequency depending on the speed (often called inverse proportion), and the frequency varies in the same direction as the speed (ofter called direct proportion). Scientifically speaking, you can think of any part changing first as an independent variable, the part changing because of the first as a dependent variable, and the last as the control.

2 ) .f increases when v increases and the wavelength stays the same

3) The wavelength stays constant.

4)speed doubles

normally doubling the frequency cuts the wave length in half
