LGBTQ is an acronym that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer , and is used to designate a community of people whose sexualor gender identities can creat shared politicaland social concerns. the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender round table (GLBTRT) is a subdivision of the american library association. its goals are both to support library professionals who identify as LGBTQ as well as promote access to LGBTQ materials for library users.
today's LGBTQ youth come out at younger ages, and public support for them has dramatically increased. research in the past decade identified risk and protective factors for mental health, which pointing to promising directions for prevention, intervention, and treatment. legal and policy successes have set the stages for advances in practices that may foster the LGBTQ mental health.
US and international studies conclude that LGBTQ youth report elevated rates of emotional distress , symptoms related to mood and anxiety disorders, self harm, suicidal behaviour . implications for this issues are awareness programm regarding law and policy, school and community programms, special clinical practice in early stage itself, parenteral education for acceptance.
