Source of Conflict in Nursing Team:
Conflict occurs in all the teams but specifically its more common in the Healthcare Organization because of continuous interaction and involvement of more than one personnel in the patient care. It is a complex behavior and each one of the team members has variations and they work towards the common goals.
The common conflict seen on the Nursing team is
Task prioritizing:
This is the most common type of conflict in Nursing Team. The nursing profession is a demanding job that includes a lot of roles and prioritizing of patient needs and decision-making skills. Examples: One Nurse thinks of prioritizing patient emotional need while the other nurse calls her for a helping hand of the patient in the emergency.
High Demands:
Mainly the conflict arises between the nurse and the Nurse Manager. Because too much of work is overloaded on the Nurse shoulder. The nurse has many responsibilities that have to be fulfilled in the minimum time. This makes her stress towards the duties. Ex: One nurse has too workload and one nurse has minimal work that makes conflicts on Nurse manager in allegation of work.
Change of Shifts:
The duration of time and the allocation of work become different in each shift. The disagreement of one duty nurse over other shift nurse makes conflict.EX: The Night duty nurse believes that the daytime nurse does not work in an organized manner and left the workplace in a confused manner. The Day duty Nurse says that her work responsibility is much more when compared to night duty nurse. These conflicts make delay in achieving the goal. The nurse workplace became stressed.
In managing the team conflict I usually approach compromise. Compromise is an Agree to disagree management. In this, each person must give up the conflict and helps for resolution of conflict. A decision has to be made soon and based on the situations. Each person has to give more importance for resolving of conflict. Everyone has to agree with the decision. Making decisions with clarity. As a result of this approach, the team members are truly satisfied and manage the agree and disagree statement and found the conclusion of the problem.
For the Next time, I use collaborating approach for managing a conflict. In this, the team members will develop a win-win solution. In this, the decision is mainly focused on the solution that fulfills everyone needs. It helps to develop a collaborative relationship with the team members. It will be very useful in attaining the goal of team members.
