Conclusion Questions and Calculations:
1. As wavelength of the incident light decreases in the double slit setup, the slit separation decreases / increases to keep the maxima separation unchanged.
2. As the wavelength of the incident light increases in the single slit setup, the slight width decreases / increases to keep the minima separation unchanged.
3. Two thin slits with separation of 0.0200mm are placed over monochromatic red laser of wavelength 632nm. What is the small angle measurement from the central maximum (zero degrees, in-line with source) to the first maximum?
4. A single, monochromatic light source is shined through an etched, flat prism with a slit separation of 0.025mm. The resulting interference pattern is viewed on a screen 1.25m away. The third maximum is found to be 6.60cm from the central maximum.
(a) What is the wavelength of the light? _______
(b) How far away from the central maximum are the first and second maxima?
________ and ________
5. The single slit diffraction pattern produced with a light of wavelength 632nm was projected at a distance L = 1.2m from the slit. The width of the slit is 5mm.
Find the width of the central maxima.
(Hint: The location of the dark fringes along a screen corresponding to diffraction minima is given by y=mlL/a, where a is the slit width and m = 1, 2, 3.
Explanation / Answer
1) so the equation for the seperation is
y = lambda L/d
so decreasing lambda, makes y smaller so decreases
2) this is the opposite so increases
3) m lambda = d sin theta
theta = arcsin(632.0E-9/0.02E-3)= 1.81 degrees
4) a)
so use y = m lambda L/d
so 6.6E-2 = 3*lambda*1.25/0.025E-3
lambda = 4.4E-7 m or 440 nm
b) for first, y = 1*440.0E-9*1.25/0.025E-3= 2.2E-3 m = 2.2 cm
for second, y = 2*440.0E-9*1.25/0.025E-3 = 4.4E-3 m = 4.4 cm
5) width is from m =1 min to m=-1 min so twice the seperation
y = 2 lambda L/a = 2*632.0E-9*1.2/5.0E-3= 3.03E-4 m
