Question
A jet plane is flying at a constant altitude. At time t1=0 it has components of velocity vx= 87m/s, vy= 113m/s . At time t2= 30.0s the components are vx= 174m/s , vy= 45m/s .
I need help finding
1.For this time interval calculate the average acceleration. ( I thought it was x= 2.9 and y= -2.96 but it said it was wrong)
2.Find the magnitude of the average acceleration.
3.Find the direction of the average acceleration (let the direction be the angle that the vector makes with the +x-axis, measured counterclockwise).
Explanation / Answer
1) ax = dvx/dt = (174-87)/30= 2.9 m/s^2
ay = dvy/dt = (45-113)/30=-2.27 m/s
2) mag = sqrt(ax^2 + ay^2) = sqrt(2.9^2 + 2.27^2)= 3.69 m/s^2
direction = arctan(ay/ax) = arctan(-2.27/2.9)= -38.05 degrees =321.95 degrees
