Question

Problem 8.13

A 65kg diver stands at the end of a 32kg springboard, as shown in the figure. The board is attached to a hinge at the left end but simply rests on the right support.(Figure 1)

Part A

What is the magnitude of the vertical force exerted by the hinge on the board?

Express your answer using two significant figures.

F =

Express your answer using two significant figures. F =

Explanation / Answer

First, you need to calculate the force that the right supportexerts and to do this you need to use torque. The net torqueis 0Nm
0Nm = 32kg*9.8*1.5m + (65kg*9.8) *3m - 1.5*f
2381.4 = 1.5* F
or
2381.1/1.5 = F
F = 1587.6 N upwards from the support
Now you must total all the vertical forces
support = man + board + hinge
1587.6 N = 65*9.8 + 32*9.8 + F(hinge)
F(hinge) = 637 N downwards
