The figure below shows the direction of the electric and magnetic fields associated with several different electromagnetic waves. What are the directions of propagation of these waves?

The figure below shows the direction of the electric and magnetic fields associated with several different electromagnetic waves. What are the directions of propagation of these waves? Case 1: along -y axis, Case 2: along +z axis Case 1: along +x axis, Case 2: along +y axis Case 1: along +z axis, Case 2: along +x axis Case 1: along +y axis, Case 2: along -z axis Case 1: along -y axis, Case 2: along -z axis

Explanation / Answer

Case 1: -y
Case 2: -z
Case 3: equal comp in -x, -y and +z direction

Case 1:
So I pointed my fingers from my for case 1 in the direction of E. This was pointing towards my my chest looking at this picture. I then curled my fingers back towards B. My palm is facing up and my thumb is facing to the left which points in the negative -Y direction.

Case 2:
I pointed my hand in the direction of E and curled my fingers back to face B direction. My thumb ends up pointing down to -Z.

Case 3:
Point fingers in dir of E again. pull fingers back to face B again and I knew my thumb was in the negative -x dir. Both vectors were at angles so equal comp in -x, -y and +z dir.
