Name 6) Karl is hanging from the trapeze 30.0 ft above Carla. Richard is jumping from a platform of height, h, onto the see-saw in order to launch Carla into the air so that she can be caught by Karl. If Carla wieghs 105 lb and Richard weighs 220 lb, what should the height, h, of the platform be? Figure 6- Karl is hanging from the trapeze 30.0 ft above Carla. Explanation / Answer

Let mass of carla be mc = 105 lb

Let mass of richard be mr = 220 lb

let h be the height which is sufficient to launch carla

using conservation of energy principle :

initial potential energy of the system is ; Ui = mrgh + 0 (carla is stationary)

after richard jumps from height h , energy of richard is 0 and as carla is launched at a height of 30 ft,

her energy will be : mcg*30

so final potential energy of the system is ; Uf? = 0 (richard is stationary) +mcg*30

equating Ui and Uf ;

we get : mcg*30 = mrg h

i.e., 105 * 30 = 220 * h

so the height of the platform should be 14.32 ft
