Question
Index of Refraction Questions 1. Find the angle of refraction f a ray of light traveling through water is incident on glass at an angle of 23 degree. The index of refraction of water is 1.33 and the index of refraction of glass is 1.52. 2. Find the angle of refraction if a ray of light traveling through glass is incident on air at an angle of 19.99 degree. The index of refraction of glass is 1.52 and the index of refraction of air is 1.00. 3. Use your results from the previous two questions and make a claim about the general behavior of refracted light when it passes from a higher index of refraction into a lower index and when it passes from a lower index into a higher one. Bonus Question: Instead of using the answers to questions 1 & 2, use Snell?s Law, without any specific numbers (i.e purely algebraically) to answer question 3.Explanation / Answer
1)
from the Snells law,
sin(i)/sin(r)=n_glass/n_water
sin(23)/sin(r)=1.52/1.33
sin(r)=sin(23)*1.33/1.52
===>
r=19.99 degrees
2)
from the Snells law,
sin(i)/sin(r)=n_glass/n_air
sin(19.99)/sin(r)=1.52/1
sin(r)=sin(19.99)*1/1.52
===>
r=12.99
3)
when the light passes from a higher refractive index of refracton into lower index
the the angel of deviation is more,
when the light passes from a lower refractive index of refracton into hogher index
the the angel of deviation is less
