Question
Can someone please explain this to me?? Thanks! I'll give points for explaination
During a laboratory experiment with an object placed in front of a concave mirror, the
image distance is q is determined for several different values of object distance p. How
might the focal length f of the mirror be determined from a graph of the data?
(b) plot q versus p; slope = 1/f
(c) plot 1/p versus 1/q; y-intercept = 1/f
(d) plot q versus p; y-intercept = 1/f
(e) plot q versus p; y-intercept = f
(f) plot 1/p versus 1/q; slope = 1/f
Explanation / Answer
1/f= 1/do + 1/di (Mirror Equation)
do= distance of object from mirror = p
di= distance of image from mirror = q
1/f = 1/p + 1/q
When the object is kept at infinity image will be formed at focus, This is a property of mirrors
Lets plot 1/p (on x-axis) vs 1/q (on y-axis). In the case of object at infinity, 1/p =0, then from the above equation
1/f=1/q which is the y intercept
Therefore the answer is c
