Question
Please assist on the 3 parts to a problem below. Please show all work and explain any assuptions or equation choices. For the question that requires drawing, a sufficiently detailed description in words is also fine. Thanks!
a.) We will assume a paper lantern float in the same way a balloon float. The hot air inside the balloon is less dense than the cooler air outside the balloon. Draw a force diagram for the lantern and take into account both the weight of the lantern itself and the hot air inside it.
b.) For simplicity, let
Explanation / Answer
a) I will tell you how to draw the diagram. Draw a lantern(a rough sketch). The weight of the lantern and hot air will have a downward direction. Since it is displacing another fluid, it will be acted upon by another force called the buoyant force. This will act upwards and will have a magnitude equal to the weight of the cold denser air this entire object is displacing. If this force is greater, the lantern rises up.
b) A body being motionless or moving with constant velocity both indicate net force equal to zero. If you have drawn the previous diagram, you will be able to understand that this happens when the total weight is equal to buoyant force. Newton's second law states, F=ma, here F=0 hence a=0
c)Assuming that the lantern is motionless,so
0.005 x 9.8 + 0.02 x d x 9.8 = 0.02 x 1.29 x 9.8 [ see the explanations in part 1]
d= 1.04= density of hot air..
