Explanation / Answer

1). Providing patient centred care is one the prime requisite to reach the treatment goals. As a part of this, the patient’s health education strategies must focus on individual patient needs.

A social worker must be aware of applying different techniques of communication with various age groups including the children, adolescents, adults and elderly individuals.

For example, when communicating with the children, it is important to ensure that the environment is safe and attractive. In case of adolescents, privacy and answering their questions with interest are important. Active listening is mostly important when dealing with elderly individuals (also for other clients). Non-verbal behaviours such as using touch during at appropriate times, ability to build trust, and conflict resolution are all important communication skills that must be learned by social workers. These skills can be learned by studying the behaviours of various groups of patients, and learning through the literature and applying the skills.
