Question
Problem 5.5 I Part A What is the magnitude of the apparent weight of a 71kg astronaut 3900km from the center of the Earth?s Moon in a space vehicle moving at constant velocity? Express your answer using two significant figures. Part B State the direction in this case. Towards the Moon (J Away from the Moon Submit ] Give Up Part C What is the magnitude of the apparent weight of a 71 kg astronaut 3900km from the center of the Earth?s Moon in a space vehicle accelerating toward the Moon at 3.9m1S2 Express your answer using two significant State the direction in this case. Towards the Moon Away from the MoonExplanation / Answer
g-moon = 1.6 m/s^2
G moon (3900) = g(radius of moon)^2/(3900^2) = 1.6/4 = 0.4
The astronaut is accelerating towards moon so net acceleration = 0.4 - 3.9 = - 3.5m/s^2
So weight of astronaut = 71*3.5 = 248.5 N
The weight is upwards i.e. away from the moon surface
