Question

Consider the experiment for sound wave in the manual. You have a tube with water in it. You knock the fork with frequency 400 Hz and hold it on the open end of tube. And then you decrease the water level to find the position where you can hear the resonance. On level L1=________________ m you can find the first resonance. After you find the first resonance, you continually decrease the water level. On L2=_________________ m you will find the second resonance. Here assume the speed of sound wave is 340 m/s and L_corr is 0.01m. The answer have four digit after point (for example: 0.2500)

Explanation / Answer

for first harmonics of one end closed tube is = (4/1)*(L1+e)

and second harmonics of one end closed tube is = (4/3)*(L2+e)

where ,

lambda is wavelength

L is length of water column

e is end correction

frequency is 400hz

now,

speed = frequency • wavelength

wavelength= speed/frequency = 340/400=0.85m

now,

for calculating L1

= (4/1)*(L1+e)

=>0.85=4*(L1+0.01)

=>0.2125=L1 +0.01

=>L1= 0.2015m

now for calculating L2

= (4/3)*(L2+e)

0.85 = (4/3)*(L2+e)

=>0.6375 = (L2+0.01)

=>L2=0.6275
