Question
Can someone please help with (e) and (f) only. Thanks in advance. A student stands at the edge of a cliff and throws a stone horizontally over the edge with a speed of v1 = 18.5 m/s. the cliff is h = 48.6 m above a body of water as shown in the figure below. what are the coordinates of the initial position of the stone? what are the components of the initial velocity of the stone? what is the appropriate analysis model for the vertical motion of the stone? what is the appropriate analysis model for the horizontal motion of the stone?Explanation / Answer
Of course, in question e) you re wrong because you are actually putting the value of the innitial state, (Vx = 18.5 m/s). In this case, the question it's not asking for that, you already answer that un part b.
You need to write the equation for Vx and Vy in an instant of time. These are:
Vy = gt or simply 9.8t. Try to put first gt, because the question ask for equations and not values. If it's wrong, then put it with 9.8t.
Vx = Vo = 18.5 m/s. Since it's wrong you may try to put it as Vx or Vo, and maybe you could get it right. This because Vx is constant during all the movement, so the value of Vx in function of time, it's the same as the value of innitial velocity. And as I said before, the question is asking for equations and not value.
f) The equation for x:
x = xo + vt. If Xo = 0, then x = vt. However in this case, you are right, it should be 18.5t, however, you should try to put it as Vx t or Vot,
If you are still stuck or even with this, the question it's still wrong, try to change then the signus. Anything else, you may tell me in a comment and I'll glady help you.
