Question

A periscope (see figure below) is useful for viewing objects that cannot be seen directly. It can be used in submarines and when watching golf matches or parades from behind a crowd of people. Suppose the object is a distance p1 from the upper mirror and the centers of the two flat mirrors are separated by a distance h.

(a) What is the distance of the final image from the lower mirror? (Use any variable or symbol stated above as necessary.)

d = _____

behind the lower mirror

(b) Is the final image real or virtual?

virtual

real

(c) Is it upright or inverted?

upright

inverted

(d) What is its magnification?

_______
(e) Does it appear to be left

Explanation / Answer

The upper mirror will produce virtual, and actual size image.

Magnification is given by

I = distance of image from the mirror / distance of object from the mirror

M1 = -q1/ p1 =1

This is image is at distance p1 above the upper mirror and it is the object for lower mirror.

P2= P1+h

The image formed by the lower mirror will be actual size and upright.

d=-P2

=-p1+h

M2= -q2/p2 =1

Mt = M1 M2

Hence the final image will be d=p1+h , behind the lower mirror.

b) The final image will be virtual

c) It will be upright

d) Magnification will be 1.

e) No
