Question

An ohmic resistor (R1 = 6.5 k ohm) and circuit element X are connected to a battery of unknown voltage V0 as shown below. Circuit element X is of unknown resistance. It is observed that the absolute value of the voltage across resistor R1 is 1.5 V. The magnitude of the current through circuit element X is greater than that through resistor R1. less than that through resistor R1. equal to that through resistor R1. There is not enough information to complete the statement. The battery voltage is measured and found to be equal to 7.0 V. The resistance of X must be __________k ohm.

Explanation / Answer

here R1 & X are in series

in series combination there is one path for the current to flow.so the same current flows through all the resistors in series

the magnitude of current in ciuit element is equal to that through resistor R1

V1 = I*R1 = 1.5 v

I = v1/R1 = 1.5/6500 = 2.31e-4 A

potentail across X = V2 = V - V1 = 7-1.5 = 5.5 v

resistance of x = v2/I = 5.5/2.31e-4 = 23.8 kilo ohms
