Question

Hey all. I'm studying for my physics final this week and im not sure how to solve this problem. If whoever answers this could help me out by posting how they solved it and not just the answer that'd be great. Thanks .

An iceberg floats in sea water, so that part of it is is submerged and part of it sticks up out of the water. Consider an iceberg in the shape of a perfect cylinder whose heigh is 500 m and whose base has radius of 1.00 km. the volume of a cylinder is V=(pi)r^2h. assume that the iceberg remains vertical , so that the circular top face remains parallel to the surface of the water. The densities of sea water ad of ice are rho_seawater=1.03*10^3 kg/m^3 and rho_ice=.92 *10^3 kg/m^3. how high above sea level is the top of the iceberg?

Explanation / Answer

ass of the iceberg, m = rho_ice*V_ice

= rho_ice*pi*r^2*H

let h is height of the iceberg height submerged in water.

volume of the water dispalced = pi*r^2*h

in The equilibrium

weight of the body = buoyant force

we know, buoyant force = weight of the water dispalced

rho_water*V_water*g = m*g

1030*(pi*r^2*h)*g = 920*(pi*r^2*500)*h

h = 920*500/1030

= 446.6 m

so, 500 - 446.6 = 53.4 m above sea level is the top of the iceberg <<<<<<<------Answer
