Question

Charging and discharge capacitors suppose an unchanged capacitor is connected in series with a battery and bulb as shown. Predict the behavior of the bulb when the switch is closed. Explain. Set up the circuit and check your prediction.If your prediction is in conflict with your observation, how can you account for your observation? without using a voltmeter, determine the potential difference across the capacitor at the following times: just after the switch is closed. Explain how you can tell. a long time after the switch is closed. Explain how you can tell.

Explanation / Answer

1)

Here ,as the current in a RC circiut is given as

I = Io*e^(-t/T)

Hence ,the bulb will glow at full birghtness in the starting

and slwoing the brightness will decrease

and it will stop glowing after some time .

2)

potential difference across resistor ,

V = Vo *(1 - e^(-t/T))

just after closing the switch at t = 0

V = 0

the capacitor voltage is zero.

Now, after a very long time

V = Vo *(1 - e^(-infinite/T))

V = Vo

the voltage across capacitor is V
